Scientific Research Papers

The following descriptions are context to why the research was conducted or completed and a brief summery to what it is about. I am excited about this work, so I hope you take the time to read and enjoy it!

Research Paper: "Economic Forces in the Ethics and Use of Environmental Landscapes"
Research By: Simone Bilich

This paper is written in both a historical context as well as philosophical. It attempts to answer the question "What is the most important factor in understanding the establishment of the American Wilderness?" Was it the commodification of nature? The desire to progress the control of nature and use of technology? or an attempt to control the man caused chain reaction of unintended consequences? This final research paper for my course "History of American Environmental Thoughts" explores these questions and which one may have the biggest impact.

Study Analysis: "The Chemical Composition and Trading of Jasper from Pennsylvania to New England and Middle Atlantic Regions"
Analysis By: Simone Bilich

This paper was written for my "North American Archeology" course. I looked at a number of studies and compared their information to one another with the goal of uncovering more evidence about the geographic trading and use of Jasper material in prehistoric, lithic periods in Pennsylvania. I ended up learning a lot about the difficulty in tracking and researching the material since jaspers contents can vary greatly within the same province. In addition, this research revealed more about the lithic peoples behavior and distance of travel, as well as techniques to further research on Jasper in varying provinces.

Research Paper: Shared DNA Between the historic of Mesoamerica and the Anasazi in the Southwest.
Research By: Simone Bilich

I conducted research for a class I took called "North American Archeology" to learn more about the connection of different native tribes across the southwest. There is plenty of physical evidence Showcasing material and cultural crossover between the Mesoamerican and Anasazi southwestern groups, but there was also mtDNA (or mitochondrial DNA) that also showed evidence of breeding between the populations. This project increased my understanding of past connection of trade and culture between native American populations before European settlement.

Article Analysis: Understanding the Origins of Teotihuacan Sacrafices Through Oxygen Isotopic Testing
Analysis By: Simone Bilich

This paper was also written for my "North American Archeology" course. Although it is brief, it is a paper that I am quite fond of have written today. Primarily because it further explores the daunting question as to where and why human sacrifices were preformed. I also question what practices of today will be seen in similar light in the future as these once prominent rituals.
